A new swing bridge across Deptford Creek - the first of its kind in the capital - is now open to the public.
The 50 metre bridge links up the Thames Path, allowing access for pedestrians and cyclists without the need for a lengthy detour inland along Creek Road.
In a cutting-edge design, the crossing swings open like a door to make way for boats, with the help of four electric motors that can rotate it 110 degrees in under two minutes.
The bridge was built by Galliard Homes as part of their New Capital Quay riverside development - whose residents now have easy access to a Waitrose across the water.
One of the first people to cross was Edward Grint who tweeted: "The new bridge from Millennium Quay to Waitrose is finally open! After 8 years of planning! Quinoa here we come!"
Greenwich Council will operate the crossing and has announced it has secured a further £350,000 from Transport for London to develop another section of the Thames Path, to the east of the Thames Barrier.
Leader Councillor Denise Hyland said: "This is a really exciting addition to the Royal Borough – not only is it a feat of modern engineering and a really eye-catching structure, it really helps local residents and visitors by providing a proper link up the Thames Path."
