An 89 year old woman has been killed after being hit by a car in New Cross.

Police were called at 8.58am today (December 19) to reports of a serious road traffic collision in Lewisham Way.

On arrival officers discovered a woman collapsed at the scene.

Ambulance services were called but the woman was declared dead at the scene at 9.24am.

The driver of the Blue BMW 118, a man aged 25, was arrested at the scene and remains in police custody.

Officers from the road death investigation unit based at Catford are investigating the incident.

David Ball, 53, of Lewisham, was visiting his sister on Amersham Road when he saw the police cordon this morning.

He said: "One of the police men told me that a woman had been hit by a BMW.

"They don't know who's responsibility it is but it looks like the car's caught her and she's gone over the side.

"When you're that age you're not going to survive something like that."

The A20 Lewisham Way is closed both ways, and there is queueing traffic due to the accident between B218 Florence Road and Shardeloes Road.

Police are directing traffic.
