A car and a bus crashed on Mayow Road in Sydenham this morning (November 21).

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 8.15am after the car and bus collided at the junction of Earlsthorpe Road.

A Met Police spokesperson said eight people had been injured and ambulance crews took two of them to a south London hospital including a female driver.

Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

Staff at The Cake Store on nearby Sydenham Road helped injured bus passengers inside their store to wait for the emergency services.

News Shopper:

Kevin Slatter, 49, who runs the shop, told News Shopper: “There were quite a few distressed children and adults. There were a couple of young lads, who had a few nasty injuries.

“My staff were fantastic and they guided everyone inside the shop to keep them warm. It was quite cold this morning.

“The emergency services were great. It could have been a lot worse.”

A 13-year-old boy Joel Breen, who was travelling to school on the bus, was taken to hospital after the crash.

His mum Kate Breen, of Montrave Road in Penge, told News Shopper she wanted to thank the emergency services and The Cake Store staff for taking care of her son.

The 47-year-old said: "Joel is alright. He is just a bit shaken up but he will mend. He's had stitches in his knees and had cuts to his hands and arms from broken glass.

"I just wanted to say thank you to everybody who helped us. Unfortunately, I parked up on double yellow lines when I went to the cake store to see if he was alright and ended up with a ticket."

Officers remained on scene to await recovery of the bus and the car. Earlsthorpe Road was closed while accident investigation work was carried out.

The road re-opened at around 12.15pm.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman confirmed no one was trapped. Fire officers left the scene at around 9.45am.

News Shopper:

Dan Davies, of Trewsbury Road, Sydenham, was on his way to work in Shoreditch when he came across the crash scene.

The 37-year-old said “Not only was the car smashed up but the bus was significantly damaged. I thought that was quite surprising for a bus, they usually come out unscathed."
