Patients tried to flee Lewisham Hospital in panic after someone shouted ‘Ebola’ in A&E yesterday.

Up to 40 people in the hospital’s casualty were alleged to have caused chaos when an ambulance crew showed up wearing biohazard suits and brought in an elderly woman for treatment in the morning.

The woman was kept in the ambulance for an hour before being taken for tests, it was reported.

A witness told The Sun: “There was panic. Luckily, there was a glass wall between us and the potential victim.”

The woman was later deemed 'low risk' and sent home.

A Lewisham and Greenwich Trust NHS spokesman said: "Whilst we cannot discuss individual cases, we can say that we have not had any confirmed cases of Ebola at Lewisham Hospital.

“Like many other London hospitals we expect to see a number of patients with a history of travel to West Africa who need precautionary testing for Ebola under current public health guidance. In most cases, Ebola is considered very unlikely but testing is done as a precaution.”

This follows the false alarm on October 11 in which Lewisham Hospital was thrown into chaos by the arrival of a man with suspected Ebola.

The suspected patient did not have the virus, the hospital confirmed.
