BBC newsreader Fiona Bruce went back to school in New Cross to give the current crop of students career advice.

The presenter returned to her former school, Haberdashers’ Aske’s Hatcham College in Pepys Road, advising sixth-formers that, although qualifications were valuable, personality and building good working relationships were vital.

She was joined by communications director at Harper Collins Susanna Frein and Prima magazine picture editor Jo Lockwood.

Her visit, which also included talks by  was organised by education charity Future First, which has invited celebrities and professionals like doctors and lawyers back to their old school.

The charity encourages pupils to use alumni  as work experience providers, mentors and role models.

Future First Managing Director Alex Shapland-Howes said, "Many schools are already using their alumni as inspirational relatable role models who know the background of the students, kicked a ball in the same park, may have had the same teachers.

"If students see people like them with the same background have succeeded, they are more likely to believe they can too."
