Dark winter evenings in Deptford are set to be filled with weird and wild characters to give you a chill.

The Hunters Grimm is a promenade theatre show that leads audiences around town where they will hear tales from the likes of an anarchic frog convinced he is a prince and needs to be flung at a wall and a murderous ageing step-mother.

The show by theatre group Teatro Vivo – whose mantra is ‘theatre where you’d least expect it’ – is inspired by the tales of the Brothers Grimm.

Director Sophie Austin said: “Not many people know that they actually collected the stories. They didn’t actually write the fairy tales we know and love, they collected them from friends, neighbours and people around Germany.

“The audience arrives and are given a task by the brothers to help them hunt for more stories, so they head out onto the streets of Deptford and come across characters who will tell them a story.”

Among the stories are some that are remarkably familiar, but with a dark twist.

Sophie said: “The wolf who ate Red Riding Hood is now a pelt. He will tell you the story of his last lunch.

“You will meet a step-mother who is so concerned that her step-daughter is going to be more beautiful than she is that she is considering killing her.”

Though these are stories you will have heard as a kid, The Hunters Grimm is designed for brave and curious grown-ups.

“It is dark. The Grimm stories are dark – they deal a lot with death, poverty, longing. It is perfect for this dark winter evening.”

The Hunters Grimm begins at Deptford Lounge and ends at The Albany. It runs from Wednesday, October 22, until Saturday, November 8.
