A resident-led housing association for people in Downham and Bellingham has been named the country's third best.

Phoenix Community Housing, which became London’s first resident-owned housing association in 2007, is the smallest and newest landlord in the top 10 list compiled by the magazine 24housing.

The top 10 were whittled down by a judging panel from a shortlist of 50 landlords, drawn from nominations by other social landlords, before the order was determined by a public vote.

Phoenix recently unveiled The Green Man, a Bromley Road pub transformed into a community hub .

Chief executive Jim Ripley said: "There are nearly 2,000 social landlords in the UK and to be named as within the top three is a remarkable achievement for a housing association of our size.

"This recognition is a testament to the shared commitment of residents and staff to turn around the fortunes of our area and to improve people’s lives."
