More than eight years after it was first promised, safety improvement work is finally set to start at a Catford danger junction.

Residents and councillors have been warning for years about the dangerous crossroads, which links Bromley Road with Whitefoot Lane and Southend Lane.

But, despite their concerns, progress has been even more slow-moving than the rush hour traffic.

Former Mayor of London Ken Livingstone hinted way back in 2006 that work was about to start on new green man crossings. His successor as mayor Boris Johnson had also assured the London Aseembly on several occasions that something would be done.

Now, finally. controlled pedestrian crossings on all arms of the junction are set to be installed, along with widened footways, better line marking and new lighting over a 16-week period.

Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Lewisham East Julia Fletcher said: ""I'm delighted that the pedestrian safety improvements at the Tiger's Head junction will finally go ahead after years of questions and prompting from Caroline Pidgeon, previous Lib Dem assembly members and Lewisham councillors.

"Just last week I put in a public question on this issue to chase progress.  It doesn't reflect at all well on successive mayors of London that it has taken so long to sort out this dangerous junction."

Work starts on September 29 and takes place on the footways from 9.30am to 3pm, and on the carriageway from 9pm to 5am.

In a statement, Transport for London said: "As with all works on the Transport for London Road Network, we must balance possible disruption to residents with disruption to traffic.

"Working during the day and night provides us with the best chance to complete these works safely and as quickly as possible whilst minimising disruption."
