Hundreds of people have warned a Downham road is dangerous because its one-way system is being consistently flouted - but Lewisham Council says there is no evidence.

News Shopper reported in June how 300 residents had signed a petition calling for better enforcement of the one-way system in Old Bromley Road.

Julia Fletcher, the Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Lewisham East, had warned someone could die on the road after a number of near misses.

But, in a written answer to her question on the issue, Lewisham Council said enforcement officers had seen no offences being committed over a nine month period.

Deputy Mayor Councillor Alan Smith said: "Consideration could be given to look at switching that short stretch of Old Bromley Road back to a two way operation but, given the limited evidence of non-compliance and current funding constraints, it is unlikely that we could justify the costs of such a scheme.

"In any event, the council will continue with sporadic enforcement and monitor the level of non-compliance in that way before considering the matter further."
