Boris Johnson is considering action after concerns were raised for the safety of pedestrians at Deptford Broadway.
Back in March, Assembly Member Darren Johnson urged safety improvements and branded the road "a complete nightmare for both pedestrians and cyclists".
And in a question to the Mayor of London, Mr Johnson pointed out that pedestrians were forced to negotiate nine lanes of fast-moving traffic due to a lack of crossing facilities.
The mayor responded that a preliminary design was now under discussion to improve pedestrian safety.
Darren Johnson said: "I look forward to seeing the detail of the plans to make Deptford Junction a safer place to cross.
"This sounds like welcome news on a hazardous road crossing which has been a nightmare for so many years. This junction feels dangerous and is dangerous. It has acted as a barrier which has divided one side of the community from the other.
"However, this junction needs a major over haul not minor tweeks."
