Dennie Dolan Downham fox attack: Parents hit out at internet trolls over online slurs

THE parents of baby Dennie Dolan who had his finger bitten off by a fox at their home in Downham have hit out at internet trolls who are blaming them for what happened.

Speaking about the attack on the Daybreak television programme today Hayley Cawley and her partner Paul Dolan said they had been subjected to taunts online.

Aled Jones and Lorraine Kelly interviewed Dennie Dolan's parents about what happened. (Picture from Daybreak)

They told presenters Lorraine Kelly and Aled Jones people have been saying they made up the story to protect a family dog.

Talking about the comments about them online Miss Cawley said: “They’ve been terrible, I had a little look last night.

“I did have a little look and then I had to close the page down because I just thought ‘Oh my God’.

“Saying about me having a dog and stuff – I’ve never had a dog in my life.”

And other people accused them of making up the story to get a bigger council house.

But yesterday a spokesman for the Met Police said they were going to take no further action as officers were satisfied there were no criminal offences.

This morning’s television interview came a day after mother-of-three Miss Cawley told papers how she had left five-week-old Dennie propped up on a sofa after his feed and went upstairs to tidy up but came running back downstairs when she heard screaming.

She said the fox had Dennie’s left hand in its jaws and his head was covered in blood and it was running down his cheeks.

The 28-year-old kept hitting the fox until it let go of her son.

Dennie had to undergo a lengthy operation to have his finger reattached and needed stitches to his cheek.

He also needed treatment for injuries to his face and head.

The fox grabbed him after it got in through the front door of the family home in Dagonet Road.

Mr Dolan had left earlier to collect older children Ellouise, nine, and five-year-old Lee from school and had slammed the door shut behind him.

But Ms Cawley believes the latch did not catch properly so the fox was able to get into the house.

The couple now say they could never go back to the property.

"The couple now say they could never go back to the property."

Surely the lad will be more comfortable with a roof over his head, so where do you go if you don't want to go home?

Like a lot of people, I've question why the story changes depending on which "exclusive" they've sold their story to

New Council Proptery on its way.

I bet they haven't told DWP about their payment from the Sun Newspaper .

Why would you leave a 5 week old baby propped up on a sofa if your not even going to be in the room let alone upstairs as he had just been feed he could have been sick and choked on his own vomit.

Hudclan5, why are you even bothered? You don't appear to be bothered about your spelling or the trauma that this poor mum has just experienced.

"I bet they haven't told DWP about their payment from the Sun Newspaper ." So why don't you tell them?

Perhaps it will make you feel better rather than just bitter.

And how much do you think the nationals offer non-celebs for "their story" ? Given what they've just been through why begrudge them a bit of "smile money". I don't.

Now before any of you start having a go at me, I'm not saying anything about them having a dog; People who know of them have seen on Facebook that most of their friends/family have Staffs and the Mother goes to Crayford Dog Stadium. Which probably would explain why there were rumours circulating that they had a retired greyhound dog to guard the property and surrounding area against foxes..!! So why would so many people suggest they had a dog?

Another inconsistency - she says she's never had a dog in her life

Technically correct in that she has never been the owner, but as her mother & other members of the family are/have been dog owners then she has been with dogs for all the time she lived with her parent(s)

When I said the Mother I meant the baby's, not her Mother.

Call me what you like but I don't believe a word of this story. Its all fiction as far as I'm concerned. Any foxes I've ever seen are as timid a door mouse, they run away from humans.

Agree with what a lot of people have posted on this and other articles the NS have published in that there seems to be a lot of inconsistencies on the actual events….its either poor reporting or dodgy story telling.

First and foremost, your heat goes out to the baby and to what he has suffered.

With the parents….hmmmmm…
.if the story is true then it must have been a shock for parents, but even so YOU are to blame for what happened. Leaving a helpless child alone and on a bloody sofa!!!! Whether a fox got into the house or not, anything could have happened to that child whilst you were upstairs allegedly “investigating”.

“making the story up for a bigger house”…..and yet you won’t return to the one you have? This speaks for itself.

“Met Police said they were going to take no further action as officers were satisfied there were no criminal offences”…..The never get anything wrong do they and considering where the witness statements have come from, it’s hardly surprising.

With regards to foxes….whenever I see them and they see a human or indeed another animal, they run away!

Just out of curiosity, does anyone actually slam the door shut these days considering how they’ve evolved? Granted you can probably do it from the inside with your feet if you’re carrying something, but when leaving the house???

Again, my heart goes out to the little one…the parents I couldn’t care less about.

I am so pleased that this tiny boy is getting better. His mum must have been frantic. Good luck to their little family. What everyone is missing here is the most important part of the whole story. It doesn't matter if Denny Dolan was attacked by a fox or a dog, what matters is the disgusting way the pro hunting press have spun this story to demonise foxes. The Mail has had lurid pictures of a snarling fox and the picture of the huge dead fox hanging off the ladder that comes out every time the F word is mentioned. I read a headline from their 'expert' the other day it went something like, "If we do nothing about these filthy vermin a child will be killed etc etc ". Everything in his story that followed was inaccurate and couched in terms to terrify those of us who have children. This man was a rat catcher for a living. He was no expert just a scare monger. Fox attacks are so rare you are probably more likely to win the lottery than be eaten by a fox. We are being led by the nose by those who want a repeal of the hunting Act. Thousands of dog attacks happen every year, but they don't get this press coverage, because those deviants in red coats who like disembowelling foxes as a fun day out, don't chase dogs. Please don't join the lynch mob against foxes, you are playing into the hands of the rich and unprincipled. Look on The Fox Website where there are REAL experts and lots of real information about these beautiful wild animals. This Tory Government under David Cameron have promised a free vote on a repeal of the hunting Act. A recent scientific poll showed that three quarters of the public want the ban to stay. This story is a godsend to those who want a repeal. If they can frighten us into thinking foxes are a threat, we will all clamour for a repeal. They are using baby Dolan as a pawn, do you honestly think they give a stuff about him and his family.

ct me if I read/heard wrong, but I thought the house where it happened was only a 2-bed property, so how did she have a 3-bed house back in 2009 and was also expecting her 3rd child then? She only has 3 now!

Another to add to list of how many times the story gets changed (and how much did she get paid by ITV?)

Firstly, hope the little man makes a full recovery

'The couple now say they could never go back to the property.' - nice to have the choice, what of the people who own a property when something happens you have to return to and get on with it. Take precautions to make sure it doesn't happen again. But you'll struggle to find a property that doesn't have foxes nearby

Safest would be to make sure he shut the door - mother said he didn't but he's not accepting any responsibility

Look at the state of them on national TV, they should be ashamed of this not telling the world. Why was the door not closed? its winter !!... and agree, Foxes are timid unless threatened. Something does not add up here, and I doubt they are telling the full truth. I don't agree with the cull, it will only make it worse. I live next to a large open space, you would think I would see a few foxes, I see two if I am lucky! .. they are not a problem however as per NS goes on a massive witch (FOX) hunt! ..
