Lewisham policeman injured in Lee scissors attack released from hospital

LEWISHAM's borough commander has praised an officer who has been discharged from hospital after being attacked with scissors.

The 36-year-old was rushed to hospital yesterday (Feb 6) after attending a domestic violence incident in Farmcote Road, Lee.

Chief Superintendent Russell Nyman said: "The officer was wearing body armour which prevented serious injuries from being inflicted, however the blow was with such force that it fractured the officer's ribs and he required hospital treatment.

"The officer has since been discharged from hospital and is recuperating at home. I cannot commend his actions high enough as the officer was responding to a call to protect the public from harm and as a direct result he was injured.

"This incident only seeks to demonstrate the risk our staff take every hour of every day, 365 days of the year to protect the public of Lewisham.

"I am extremely proud of the bravery shown by this officer and the officers who were with him who responded to the call and am equally proud to lead such brave, courageous and dedicated staff who always put the public first."

A man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of GBH and is currently in custody at a south London police station.
