LEWISHAM youngsters are celebrating their youth club reopening after a community effort secured the new venue.

The Walk in Space youth club was saved by funds from the Crofton Park local assembly with residents and a youth forum deciding that the monthly club was a top priority.

It has now been upgraded to a weekly service after it moved from St Hilda’s Church to St Saviour’s Church, in Brockley Rise, where it was unveiled on January 25.

Activities include sports, music, arts and crafts, games, and cooking and the club aims to mentor young people to become future leaders by supporting them with CV advice and providing work experience.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock said: “The Walk in Space youth club is a fantastic example of a community-led idea that has been developed and delivered by local people.

"It’s a great example of a community deciding what they wanted in their area and working together to make it happen.”

Young Mayor of Lewisham Jamel Higgins added: “The reopening of the Walk in Space youth club is a great new facility in the local area and it means that more young people in Lewisham will have another fun and exciting place to go.”

The Walk in Space Youth Club has evolved from a local assembly project into its own independent organisation with charitable status.
