1913: After the takeover of the National Telephone Company by the Post Office, new tall ‘H-poles’ are established on trunk roads throughout Kent.
1943: Thirty-eight children and two teachers are killed in a bomb attack on Sandhurst Road School, Catford. Many children were taking their mid-morning break when Messerschmitt 109s started bombing and strafing targets at will. The 500kg bomb which fell on the school blew out the whole of the central part.
1963: David Frost is the cheeky frontman of a new Saturday night satire programme in trouble for lampooning famous personalities. The BBC show That Was The Week That Was received more than 6,000 telephone calls, with many viewers complaining of Frost’s ‘attitude’. It may be taken off the air.
