A NEW Cross soldier is among five men convicted of trafficking firearms and drugs.

Duran Wright, aged 28, of Jerningham Road, was convicted of conspiracy to import firearms and conspiracy to import cocaine at Woolwich Crown Court yesterday (January 21).

He was arrested last March while serving in Germany and charged three months later on his return to the UK.

The charges came after a stash of guns, ammunition and drugs were found inside a car being driven from Calais by two accomplices.

Officers found a total of five handguns and 500 grams of cocaine stashed inside an Army issue boot.

Detective Inspector Chris Jones from Trident Gang Crime Command, North-East Team said: "It has led to the removal of five lethal firearms and ammunition, weapons which would inevitably have been used to commit acts of serious violence on the streets of London."

The men, including two other serving soldiers and one ex-soldier, will be sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on January 25.
