NEW council housing will be built for the first time in 30 years as Lewisham continues to consult on transferring its stock to Lewisham Homes.

Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock agreed last night (Jan 17) for 76 new homes to be built in the borough from four-bedroom family houses to flats.

The programme - set to create 250 properties overall - is part of the Housing Matters project, which has also seen a consultation over the future of council housing in Lewisham.

Now a further consultation is planned over whether tenants want to see things continue as they are or if they would like to see housing organisation Lewisham Homes adapted and taking over the ownership of the properties it manages.

Sir Steve said: "Building these 76 new homes is an exciting and major step towards meeting the demand for housing in the borough and providing homes that our residents desperately need."
