THE leader of a council's Tory group has hit out after the town hall's full meeting for members was cancelled.

Councillor Spencer Drury is angry Greenwich Council's mayor Harry Singh has postponed the meeting due to take place on September 20.

It has now been re-scheduled for November 29, meaning the full council will not have met for four months.

The last full council meeting was on July 26, before the summer recess.

Cllr Drury has written to Cllr Singh to express his outrage.

He wrote: "The cancellation of this meeting indicates a certain disrespect for the council tax payers of this borough.

"Many residents will quite rightly ask Do the councillors do enough to deserve the £9,000 salary they receive each year?'"

The meeting was cancelled by Cllr Singh due to a lack of formal business.

But Cllr Drury is now calling for the meeting to be held on its original date.

He added: "The full council meeting is an opportunity for members of the public and councillors to ask questions, for deputations to be received and motions moved to change the council's policy."

A Greenwich Council spokesperson said: "Representatives from all parties were consulted about the cancellation of the meeting. At the time officers were not made aware of any pressing business and as a result, the meeting was cancelled in order to reduce unnecessary expenditure.

"There are a range of meetings throughout the year when both members and the public can speak or make representations. As well as full council, there are regular meetings of the cabinet, overview and scrutiny committee, planning and licensing committees among others.

"Such meetings are advertised and their agendas are published. The press, public and members are invited to all of these. With the agreement of the chair, both members and the public can make representations at them."
