BIG Brother is watching Greenwich Council, in the form of a new website launched by fed-up residents.

The Greenwich Watch site has been set up by a group of anonymous residents, who claim the council has become consumed by spin and presentation.

They promise to hold council bosses to account and keep the authority "on its toes".

The site was set up last month, just after the elections which saw the Labour group re-elected to run the council.

The Greenwich watchers say their motivation is to "cut through the spin" and give residents a mouthpiece.

But they also want to retain an air of mystery and would only communicate with News Shopper via email.

One watcher told us: "We think the council spins a little too much. We want to cut through the spin.

"We are not just holding the council to account, we are also letting the community have a platform to comment and make its views known.

"Our hope is to at least keep the council on its toes."

The watchers say they are long-standing residents of the borough and deny claims they are politically-motivated.

The site is hosted in America which, according to the watchers, gives it licence to print more controversial and salacious stories about the council.

People visiting the site can also post comments, to have their say on their experiences of dealing with the council.

A council spokesman said: "We encourage all residents to take an active part in democracy and get their views across on issues which are important to their communities.

He added: "We would urge people who want to make a real difference locally to speak to us direct."
