A FATHER-OF-TWO says he was appalled after finding evidence of class-A drug taking in a hospital toilet.

Jamie Lewis found a plastic bottle with a makeshift pipe attached in a toilet close to the children's ward at Lewisham Hospital on January 22.

Mr Lewis, of Merritt Road, Brockley, says he saw a man who looked like a "junkie" walking down a corridor at the hospital moments later.

Following the sighting, he alerted a member of the hospital's security team who ensured the bottle was removed and the area cleaned.

Mr Lewis said: "I was absolutely disgusted. I went to use the toilet and found this bottle which had obviously been used to take crack.

"There was tin foil on top of the bottle and it was clear to see the remnants of the used crack. It looked a bit like ash.

"When I left the toilet I saw this shifty bloke walking down the corridor. He looked like a total junkie.

"I think it's shocking security didn't pick up on him quicker and chuck him out."

Mr Lewis had been in and out of the hospital over the Christmas and New Year period with his 10-week-old son Leo, who was receiving treatment for a bout of bronchitis.

The factory worker also says his two-year-old son Louie developed a virus while at the hospital.

A hospital spokesman said: "On January 22 it was reported to security staff there was a bottle which looked like it had been used for illegal drug use in the public toilet on the first floor of our main ward."

The hospital apologised for the distress caused to Mr Lewis and is investigating the matter.

The spokesman added: "We would like to assure our patients any criminal activity such as misuse of drugs taking place on hospital premises is not tolerated and as soon as it is made known to us it is investigated and dealt with swiftly."

Lewisham Hospital has 24-hour CCTV monitored by security staff.
