POLICE officers will be taught more about dealing with deaf people thanks to a new charity-run initiative.
The Royal National Institute for Deaf People (RNID) is setting up a training scheme for police officers.
The aim of the scheme is to raise awareness among policemen of the barriers faced by deaf and hard of hearing people.
Officers will be able to learn basic sign language and will be given advice by RNID trainers on how to communicate more effectively with deaf people.
So far seven London boroughs, including Lewisham, have agreed to send their officers on the courses, which began last week.
RNID regional trainer Patricia Wilfort said: "It is essential the police provide a good service to deaf and hard of hearing people.
"We are delighted the Met are taking such a positive approach."
