WITNESSES say a car which allegedly killed a father-of-two on a zebra crossing was being followed by police.

Police have confirmed they were following a Rover 620 which allegedly killed Les Ennis, 45, and left his wife, Jackie, 43, seriously injured on Bromley Road, Catford.

Mr and Mrs Ennis were heading home to Shroffold Road, Downham, after a night out at their regular haunt, the New Studio Working Men's Club in Old Bromley Road, when the incident occurred.

Coleen Pearson, 59, saw the police car race past her window and heard the crash.

Mrs Pearson, of Bromley Road, Downham, said: "I was in the hallway when I heard a loud bang.

"I went to the window and then saw a police car with its flashing blue lights. It didn't stop and just kept going on towards Catford.

Working men's club bar manager John Reynolds, 66, joined friends in paying tribute to the couple.

He said: "I knew Les for more than 20 years.

"I cried when I found out he had died. He was a good friend."

Mr Reynolds added: "He was here most nights with his wife Jackie. They were always together, very seldom apart.

"He loved life and was a practical joker. He was wonderful and always shook my hand at the end of a night."

Club members have said the incident involving the "perfect couple" has left a "void in the club".

Mrs Ennis remains in a critical condition at Lewisham Hospital.

A police spokesman confirmed officers were following the car from the Shell petrol station on Bromley Hill after they noticed it "being driven erratically".

However, the vehicle was not being followed at speed and the police car's siren and blue lights were being used to make progress through traffic.

The officers did not witness a collision because they were some distance behind and were on a bend in the road.

As a result they continued to follow the car along Bromley Road on the way to Catford.

The incident is not being investigated by the Independent Police Complaints Commission or the Met's internal investigation department.

Two men, aged 27 and 28, were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving in connection with the incident.

They were bailed to return to a south London police station on December 13.
