ALTERNATIVE suggestions for the future of threatened Borthwick Wharf have been put forward.

The Creekside Forum has presented three ideas in response to a request for suggestions for the former cold meat store in Deptford by London Mayor Ken Livingstone.

Assembly member Darren Johnson challenged the Mayor to ask his advisors to meet with the forum in a bid to save the building, which developer George Wimpey plans to demolish as part of a development to build flats and commercial property.

Creekside Forum want to save the wharf, which was designed by Royal Institute of British Architects gold medalist Sir Edwin Cooper, and see three other options considered for the site.

They include expanding the buildings and using them as a storage facility for art, museum artefacts or anything needing secure premises and a controlled temperature.

Creating an art gallery out of the space or letting it out to businesses has also been put forward.

John Taylor, Creekside Forum co-ordinator, said: "We've tried to produce examples of possible uses for the building out of the real world.

"This isn't an exhaustive list of uses but they are representative."

Talking about the possible demolition he said: "It would be a disaster.

"The building is very much part of this area's heritage.

"An architectural feature would be of much greater distinction than another crappy tower block."
