A TEENAGER waiting for new arms has been given inspiration by another famous amputee.

Aleksandr Ponomarenko, from Chernihiv, in northern Ukraine, was only 13 when he lost both his arms in an accident.

The 16-year-old has been flown over to the UK to get new arms fitted but while waiting for generous News Shopper readers to help fund his treatment he spent time with Ali Abbas, 13, who lost both his arms in a missile attack during the Iraq war.

Both boys are being treated by experts at Queen Mary's Hospital, in Roehampton.

Speaking after the meeting Aleksandr said: "I was very looking forward to meeting Ali. He gave me encouragement and I showed him how I can write with my feet."

Bear Essential fundraiser Guy Rampersaud says it was probably Ali, who is staying with Guy's parents in Moordown, Shooters Hill, who had gained most from the meeting.

He said: "Aleksandr has had years to learn with his feet so he was showing Ali what he could do.

"His writing with his feet is neater than mine and he regularly beats me on the PlayStation."

The charity had hoped Aleksandr would be given electric arms but following medical advice he should be fitted with two £8,000 mechanical arms this week.
