Inquiry into man's fall after arrest

4:21pm Wednesday 14th May 2008

AN INQUIRY is being held into how a man fell from a third-floor flat after being arrested.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is appealing for further witnesses who saw the incident in Sowerby Close, Plumstead on March 5.

At around 11.40pm three Kent Police officers went to the flat to arrest a man.

They also decided to arrest his brother who was wanted on warrant.

After the brother was arrested, he went to the lounge and opened the French windows.

The IPCC is investigating how he then fell to the pavement below, suffering a fractured hip, wrist and arm.

IPCC commissioner for south east London Mehmuda Mian Pritchard said: "We are currently using our own investigators to look into the events that night and the police contact with the injured man.

"We want to find out exactly what happened and will then consider whether police guidelines were followed."

Any witnesses should call 020 7166 3000 or email enquiries@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk
