ROBBERIES in a London borough have fallen by almost 1,000 in a year - the highest fall in the capital.

Figures released by Lewisham police show there were 969 fewer victims between April last year and March this year, compared with the previous 12 months.

In 2006/07, there were 2,394 offences, while this year there were 1,425 - a drop of 40.5 per cent.

Deputy borough commander Detective Superintendent Richard Martin said: "It's the biggest reduction in the whole of London. At its peak we had nearly 90 robberies a week.

"Now we have two or three a day, if that.

"It's a fundamental turnaround. We are particularly proud of that."

Det Supt Martin says the fall is due to the police's priority crime tasking teams, which now carry out investigations for the first 24 hours, gathering evidence and speaking to witnesses.
