PUPILS dressed up for World Book Day and received a donation for their new library.

Children at Wyborne Junior and Infant Mixed School, Footscray Road, New Eltham, dressed as their favourite book characters for an assembly to celebrate the event.

During the assembly, voluntary organisation the Community Association of New Eltham made a donation of £1,000 towards the refurbishment of one of the school's libraries.

Association secretary John Killick said: "At the end of the year we have surplus funds and we wanted to give some money back to the community."

The cash will be used to fit new bookshelves in a library used by Key Stage 1 pupils, who are aged from four to seven.

Deputy headteacher Katy Kerner said the donation will "enable us to provide 21st-century library facilities for our children".
