A SCARECROW competition has been launched at a school.

St Winifred's Catholic School, Newstead Road, Lee, hosted the launch of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) competition, which is open to primary schools across south-east England.

Any school registered with the RHS campaign for school gardening can enter by submitting a photograph of a scarecrow made by pupils.

Judges will choose 20 scarecrows to compete for medals at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show between July 8 and July 13.

Blue Peter gardener Chris Collins, who attended the launch, said: "The competition is a great way for kids to get creative, as well as encouraging them to get excited about gardening."

The closing date for entries is May 12 and the winner will be announced at the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show on July 7.
