A DOG owner was burned trying to rescue her dog from a fire in a flat in Plumstead.

Firefighters rescued the dog from an eighth-floor flat in the River Heights block in Glyndon Way at 7.17pm yesterday.

The woman in her mid-40s was given first aid and later taken to hospital suffering from minor burns on her hands and smoke inhalation.

The woman had gone out to the shop and when she got home the flat was on fire.

She tried to get back inside to rescue her Staffordshire bull terrier but was beaten back by the flames and smoke.

The alarm was raised by a group of teenagers in the street below who spotted flames and smoke coming from the window on the eighth floor.

Crews from Plumstead and Erith were able to stop the fire doing serious damage to the flat but there was smoke damage particularly in the living room.

A spokesman for London Fire Brigade said the woman did not have a smoke alarm.

London Fire Brigade will fit smoke alarms for free as part of a home safety check.

What is it with dogs, fires and rats this week? Seems to be dominating the headlines of newshopper these past couple of days. Hope the dog and its owner has recovered, how awful for them both.

And again, some idiot who can't be bothered to spend out a few pound to make their home more safe. Those who lack common sense get what's coming to them.

I am pleased the dog is okay, it's not their fault the owner is a dim wit.

I wonder whether the irresponsibility of not having a smoke alarm coupled with the likelihood that the cause of the fire (whatever it is) was avoidable should lead to this woman being billed for the fire brigade's time and trouble? Maybe would think more carefully about safety then.

That's a bit harsh of you, J and Gemma. She already suffered serious damage to her home, minor burns and the trauma of almost losing her dog! Besides that, isn't it the freeholder's or council's duty to fit their flats out with smoke alarms? We don't know her circumstances, maybe she had gone to buy a smoke alarm, maybe she had just moved in. I feel sorry for her.

I don't think it's harsh at all. If you're not going to take responsablity for your safety and the safety of your pets, you're not going to get any sympathy from me.

Gemma, I think she should have to pay. I also think she should be banned from having pets due to her negligence.

J i wouldnt say she was negligant to the dog she was risking her life to save the poor thing, also if she did have an alarm she wouldnt of heard it anyway she was at the shop, so i feel quite sorry for her!

She may not have heard it, but someone else may have, and may have been able to get to the poor animal before the fire was so out of control. If the woman wants to risk her own life by being lazy or cheap or stupid and not having a smoke alarm then fine, but it's not fine to risk the lives of innocent animals.

lets go another way people say about fitting a smoke alam,WHEN WAS THE COUNCILS GAS CHECK CARRIED OUT ON THE PROPERTY as no alarm would have been picked up by those who checked it to see if one iwas fitted plus if it was working. if she had just moved in then the flat was not checked properly therefore council at fault
