VIETNAMESE nationals from Deptford and Sidcup were two of the brains behind a string of "sophisticated" cannabis factories, a court heard.

Van Pham, of Reginald Road, Deptford, and Toan Khan-Ly, of Raeburn Road, Sidcup, are accused of growing weed nearly eight times more powerful than regular cannabis at a house in Sittingbourne.

They are also accused of helping run similar houses in Hull, Sheffield and Scunthorpe.

Southwark Crown Court heard the gang rented out the cannabis factories and then laundered the profits through legitimate businesses.

Khan-Ly, aged 39, is said to have been the owner of the Sittingbourne and Sheffield houses and £21,000 in cash was found at his home when he was arrested.

He denies cultivating cannabis.

Pham, aged 41, denies buying a property with profits made from selling cannabis.

He has also pleaded not guilty to conspiring to supply cannabis, cultivating cannabis and transferring £180,000 of criminal property.

Two others also deny various cannabis cultivation and supply charges.

The trial continues.
