MUSEUM visitors have been treated to a spicy cookery contest.

The Jerk Cookout competition was staged at the Horniman Museum Gardens in London Road, Forest Hill.

Around 10,000 people attended the event.

They listened to music from around the world while sampling jerk food.

This is a Caribbean style of cooking where food is cooked in a spicy coating.

There was also a children's play area and various stalls.

Contestants in the competition were chosen from Caribbean restaurants, takeaways, catering companies and hotel chefs from across London.

All the food was judged by a panel, which included museum patron and TV presenter Floella Benjamin.

The winner's trophy was given to D&D Family Jerk restaurant in London Road, Norbury.

Museum marketing manager Andrew Willshire said: "The jerk cookout was a succulent and sizzling success.

"It was a great way to celebrate Caribbean food and culture. "
