AN INVESTIGATION has started in the wake of a damning housing report.

An Audit Commission report published last year said Lewisham Council failed its tenants on issues such as repairs not delivering value for money.

It was rated below average and told to improve.

Now a cross-party panel will be interviewing those involved, including the council's housing department and Lewisham Mayor Steve Bullock, to look into what went wrong.

The first meeting of the housing sub-committee was held on February 8.

And the six-month probe will also examine whether tenants' rights are properly protected while Lewisham Homes takes over the management of 6,356 council homes by the end of the year.

Green Councillor Sue Luxton said: "The Audit Commission's report shocked everyone when it was made public.

"Last year, disgracefully, it was never debated properly.

"Tenants will not forgive councillors if they allow another whitewash."

The Audit Commission is an independent body responsible for ensuring the public services are value for money.
