TAXPAYERS should not have to pay more towards the rising costs of staging the 2012 Olympics, according to the London Councils.
Culture Secretary Tessa Jowell has told MPs an extra £900m needed for the Games is likely to be met by London council tax payers and lottery funds.
But the London Councils says residents should not have to pay more to cover any extra costs.
It was originally estimated between £550m and £625m would need to be raised through council tax.
London Councils' chairman Councillor Merrick Cockell said: "Any increase would be grossly unfair to Londoners as the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will bring benefits to the entire country."
The London Councils was formerly known as the Association of London Government and came into effect on October 1.
