VISITORS to Blackheath on Saturday took a step back in time, thanks to the world's oldest hockey club.
Blackheath Hockey Club marked their 150th anniversary with a match on the heath against a Parliamentary team full of MPs and their staff.
In a twist, the match - won 2-0 by the parliamentarians - was played according to 1861 rules and in traditional dress.
Founded by the Old Boys of Blackheath Proprietary School, the club used to play its matches on the heath but, since 1952, has been based in Rubens Street.
It now runs six men's Saturday teams along with four ladies' sides and regular youth fixtures.
Committee member Michael Earnshaw said: "The match we played was next to the church on the heath which is where this club started."
He added: "People were wondering what on earth was going on but they really enjoyed it."
