Greenwich becomes a royal borough

Greenwich Park Greenwich Park

GREENWICH officially becomes a royal borough today – the first place in 85 years to get the honour.

Council leader Cllr Chris Roberts is visiting the Queen’s robing room at the House of Lords where he will be presented with a letter’s patent by the head of the Crown Office.

The document – a parchment with gold lettering and the monarch’s seal – will officially confer the borough’s new status.

It marks the start of a three-day celebration, kicking off today in Woolwich, hitting Eltham tomorrow and heading to Greenwich itself on Sunday.

Cllr Roberts described it as his proudest moment and said police had insisted on a 750 limit for the number of people who could take part in Sunday’s grand parade after overwhelming interest.

He said: “It’s resonated with residents and businesses right across the borough in a quite unanimous show of support.

“I don’t think we’ve seen anything quite like it.

He added: “It will be one of the most historic days.”

Though the status change carries no specific material benefit, it is tipped to boost business and investment in the borough.

A number of new signs have appeared in the borough, but other road signs will only be changed when they are due to be replaced because of deterioration.

I hope that when the queen vists Greenwich she will be escorted throught out the bourgh. she should vist East greenwich, Charlton and Plunstead to see the dirty rundown areas that she has given a Royal Title to.
I had lived in Deptford and Greenwich for nearly 65 years but the constant Traffic problems, the Rubbish left in the steets and the No Go Areas at night made up our mind to move out of the area to a cleaner & saver lifestyle.
Greenwich council is only looking after certain areas like the tourist rip off place called the town center, the new woolich center and Asborurn Triangle where all the rich live. They ignore the rest of the bourgh.
