A FOOTBALL club kicked out of Greenwich could “die on its feet” if it cannot raise £10,000 and find a new home.

Following a dispute with Greenwich Council over unpaid rent in 2008, Greenwich Borough Football Club was evicted from its rented ground in Harrow Meadow, Eltham, to make way for the Kidbrooke redevelopment.

The unpaid players now share their ground with rivals Holmesdale in Oakley Road, Bromley, and have an average attendance of just 28 people - the lowest in the Kent League.

And despite its success on the field - it is currently sixth in the table - the 84-year-old club faces financial problems.

Manager Steve Firkins, a self-employed painter and decorator said: “I think people have forgotten about us to be honest.

“It’s a shame but the club looks like it could die on its feet.”

He and other board members, who took over the club from actors Tamer Hassan and Danny Dyer in 2008, pay for most of the club’s running costs themselves.

Mr Firkins said: “We have to find £6,000 before we kick a ball. That’s our ground rent.

“We probably need around £10,000 before the start of next season.”

The club trains at Charlton’s Sparrows Lane once a week but meets up in a park for the rest of the time.

Mr Firkins said: “It’s awful. It’s a shambles to be honest with you, but it’s something we’ve tried to do to keep the club going.

“We’d like to sit down with the council and sort out something. We need to be back in Greenwich, back in our borough, to try and get support from the local people.”

The club now plans to write to the council in a bid to find a venue.
