BOOK lovers are being invited to help give away one million free books to readers across the country.

Lewisham Council is supporting World Book Night which takes place on March 5.

People can apply to be one of 20,000 givers of 48 copies of their favourite book chosen from a selected list of 25 titles.

Givers are expected to be passionate readers who will take pleasure in recommending a book they love to other readers.

The council’s cabinet member for community services, Councillor Chris Best, said: “We’re thrilled to be involved with the inaugural World Book Night, and encourage local people who are passionate about reading to apply to be a book giver.

“Our library service will provide help in assisting book givers to gift their books to other residents.”

Applicants must say in 100 words why they want to give away a particular book from the list and the sort of people they envisage giving it to.

The closing date for entries is Tuesday (January 4).

Presumably this will be repeated when Lewisham closes most of its libraries...

All Lewisham are doing is allowing the organisers to post books to their libraries for winners to pick up.

Worth doing though, and the closing date isn't until 24th January.
