HAVE YOUR SAY: Reader Rant - anyone but England

In this week's Reader Rant opinion column John Eoin Douglas argues it's not racist to want England to fail at the World Cup. Have your say by adding your comments below.

I AM appalled that police pressure has been put upon retailers in Scotland to stop selling Anyone But England merchandise on the grounds that it might be considered racist.

It is certainly not racist to hope, as do I, that England is knocked out of the World Cup at the earliest possible opportunity.

This is the only way that our national broadcasters may be persuaded to stop showing this surfeit of sport and return to more interesting and uplifting schedules.

This column is produced by an independent writer and in no way reflects the official position of News Shopper or its parent company.

Is it racist to want anyone but England to win the World Cup or is it just political correctness gone mad to make a big deal over other nations' lack of support for 'our boys'? Why should Scottish people or Welsh or Irish be expected to get behind England? What's wrong with being anti-English? English people aren't a 'race' anyway, are they? Have your say and add your comments below.

Meanwhile, check News Shopper's website every lunchtime for a new daily opinion column. Thursday will cover a moral issue. Friday is a sport rant. Monday is back to the Shopper Rant on a topical news story. Tuesday is entertainment day. Be sure to have your say if you agree or disagree with what you read.

We're also looking for articles to be considered for next Wednesday's Reader Rant. It needs to be something interesting, lively, thought-provoking and outspoken which will spark debate among readers.

Send your article to web manager Simon Bull at sbull@london.newsquest.co.uk

I was recently accused of being racist - see my last three blogs in the Your Say Section - for admitting that I object to a neighbour installing a flagpole in his garden.
I wish England the very best of luck in the tournament but why must people smother their houses and cars in England flags?
Believe it or not, there are some people who are not in the slightest bit interested in football and would prefer it if their streets were not turned into a mass of red and white. It doesn't mean they want England to lose, they are just indifferent to it all. Are these people 'racist' too?
I have predicted England will lose today's match in my latest blog, 'My prediction for the England v Slovenia game' in the Your Say section. Does that make me a racist? I think not.

Oh, and there has existed a rivalry between Scotland and England for many years, especially when it comes to football.
So no, it isn't racist. A bit childish perhaps, but NOT racist.

Agree that is is not racist, because englishness is not a race, but an agreed common set of values and a way of life. Lets not let the england flag be hijacked by the right wing nut job lot like the union jack has been...

Have my flag up and fly it high, Dont see no issue with someone puting a flag up for 4 weeks ( well 2 in our Case ) once every 4 years.

Although I pray Andy Murray gets knocked out the tennis asap, cant stand the bloke.

The "English is not a race" argument doesn't hold much water because our laws relating to the incitement of racial hatred define "race" as a number of things which can include "Nationality" and even "National Identity" In fact anti-Jewish sentiment is covered as both Racial & religious hatred even though "Jewish" isn't a race

Our legal definition of what amounts to "Race" crimes therefore would consider "English" to be part of what it means as far as "Race" goes

However, the law in this land has become politically motivated and in many cases panders greatly to minorities at the expense and indeed the alienation of the masses

It is not uncommon to see Islamic extremists waving criminally racist banners that incite hate and even death upon "English Kuffars" "Infidel Christians" or "British Crusaders" under the very noses of uninterested police officers who would arrest anyone inciting the same kind of hate against "minorities" at the drop of a pith helmet

I'm sure we've all seen the Iconic "BEHEAD THOSE WHO INSULT ISLAM" banners at recent Islamist demonstrations in our city

In that respect I doubt very much that anybody would ever be prosecuted in the UK for Anti-English "racism" it seems we can take a joke when it's directed at us but will over react with the full force of the law if it in any way denigrates any one of our countless "minority" groups who are so easily offended

Shame

Unfortunately the 'little people' always want those bigger and better than themselves to fail. The Scots, Welsh and Irish don't have a chip on their shoulder, they're well balanced people with chips on both shoulders. Get over yourselves, little people, the English are there because they are better than you abject failures.
