CAMPAIGNERS celebrated the 40th anniversary of a leisure centre's opening with a panto poking fun at top council figures.

The Save Ladywell Pool group held a party outside Lewisham Leisure Centre in Lewisham High Street, to commemorate its opening on December 11, 1965.

The group has been campaigning against the proposed closure of the pool which is due in 2007.

Group members put on a pantomime poking fun at the council's wish to build a new secondary school on the site.

There was also Santa, an arts and crafts market and treasure hunt for the children.

Save Ladywell Pool Campaign chairman Max Calo said: "It was a very nice day. The town hall farce was condensed into an enjoyable drama. It was light-hearted, making fun at the Mayor's stance."
