LEE: Northbrook school staff in strike action

TEACHING staff went on strike at a secondary school yesterday (Mar 9) in a pay dispute.

Staff at Northbrook School in Leahurst Road, Lee, set up a picket at the school gates.

The move came amid fears that middle managers at the school will have their annual salary cut by £2,000 after a staff reorganisation.

Lewisham NUT secretary Martin Powell-Davies claimed the school was closed for several year groups and staff were now considering a two-day strike.

He said: “We got a lot of support from passers-by.

“I think the governors were surprised by the level of support.”

The school claims it has agreed to ring-fence the salaries of the staff affected by the changes.

Headteacher Father Richard Peers said: “We are deeply saddened that the NUT feel they need to disrupt our children’s education by threatening further strikes.

“The reorganisation process, which has been inclusive and fair, has always been focused on boosting the quality of education for our students and is nothing to do with cutting costs.”
