Town centre goes car-free for a day

RESIDENTS will be swapping their cars for dancing shoes, as performers and musicians take to the streets to celebrate a day without traffic.

The Greenwich Car-Free Day, now in its sixth year, is expected to attract hundreds to the town centre.

Car-free roads will be filled with colourful acts performing samba, hip-hop, ballet and jive dances.

There will also be stands providing information on ways to reduce traffic congestion and pollution.

And a man-made beach, complete with sand and deck chairs, will give the day a real touch of summer.

The event, which is organised by Greenwich Council, aims to encourage people to use their cars less and promote environmentally-friendly transport.

Council leader Councillor Chris Roberts said: "The more we can do without our car, the better it is for our air quality, the environment, and as a result, our health."

The event will run from 1pm to 5pm on Saturday, with King William Walk (north) and College Approach closed for traffic from 7am to 7pm.
