Campaign to save post office

PROTESTORS have held a demonstration to save their post office.

The South London Solidarity Federation held the protest outside the post office in Lewisham High Street on July 7.

It is fighting a move to close the branch and transfer its counter service to the WH Smith store in Riverdale, Lewisham.

The federation, a pressure group which supports local campaigns, claims the transfers amount to privatisation and will lead to a worse service and redundancies.

Its protest followed confirmation on July 4 another post office, in Woolwich Road, Woolwich, will relocate to the WH Smith store in Thomas Street, Woolwich, next April.

A Post Office spokesman said: "At a time when Post Office is losing £4m a week, partnerships such as these enable us to go on offering post office services in the heart of town.

"Without them we cannot safeguard high street branches or the services they provide."
