BROMLEY Hospitals' NHS Trust is closing a surgery unit it opened four years ago at a cost of nearly £9m.

The trust has announced the £8.8m planned surgery unit, which opened at Orpington Hospital in 2003, will transfer services to the Princess Royal University Hospital, Farnborough by autumn.

Its three operating theatres provide general and oral surgery and orthopaedic treatment.

The trust, which has a historic debt of £99m, says transferring services will save £1m each year.

Under the A Picture of Health proposals to shake up the way healthcare is provided across south east London, the unit would have closed with services transferred to Queen Mary's Hospital, Sidcup.

However in April the trust responded to the proposals and said the unit should remain at Orpington Hospital.

Orpington MP John Horam says closing the unit is a "colossal waste of money."

The Conservative MP said: "I'm very disappointed a unit which was put in place only four years ago and money was spent on building state of the art operating theatres, is to close.

"Closing them down shows the amount of money wasted in the NHS is colossal."

Susan Sulis, from the Community Care Protection Group, which campaigns on healthcare issues in Bromley borough, is "disgusted" by the news.

She said: "I'm disgusted, they actually said they proposed keeping it open and opposed closure under the previous chief executive, and people were reassured by that stance.

"It's obviously finance driven and not clinically driven.

"The care provided was excellent and this was fed back by patients."

The trust's chief executive Michael Marchment said: "We can close operating theatres without having an impact on patient care by improving the way we work.

"The most efficient way of doing this is to close three theatres at Orpington and bring the staff and equipment to the Princess Royal University Hospital.

"I wish to reassure patients they will receive the same high quality care wherever they have their surgery."

I need to borrow a couple of million - do you think the NHS would sub me seeing as they love giving our cash away!!!

What a waste of time and money building a unit that has only been opened for 4 years. How dare they use our money in this wasteful way. This money could have been put to better use improving facilities at existing hospitals.

Who gives these so-called managers their jobs, they couldn't organise a knees up in a brewery cellar if the keys were provided!!

It is shocking how money is so carelessly thrown around. Why don't you just throw it in the fire and watch it burn? It would amount to the same thing. Think how many nurses and doctors that money could have paid for.....

I have just read with a sense of disbelief the critiscims piece on the state of the NHS and they are saying that the cuts they want to make are finance based - surely if they hadn't wasted 9 million building a unit that is closing after 4 years their decisions could be clinially based as there would not be a fincane issue????

These people are a joke, they seem to not care whose money they are flinging around on follies and whims

When the treatment centre was opened at Orpington I was delighted, the staff were friendly and you got excellent care. After having an operation cancelled 3 times at the PRU I was sent again to the treatment centre and received excellent treatment. The real reason behind closing this excellent centre down is because of services transferring to Queen Marys. I have over the past few months had very quick outpatient appoinments and day surgery twice at Queen Marys. Excellent service provided by them. Why both services canot run is beyond me butthen when you have a PFI hospital this is what happens, think of how much money the builders made from the Orpington and Bromley sites, a lot less than it cost to build a new hospital with less bed capacity. I have no problem with resouces being shared for the good of the patients but QM's A&E and Maternity unit must stay. The Pru would never cope.

£90 million legacy debt my foot! In 2003, BHT had about 4 directors, in 2007 the number of Directors & Assistent Directors reached about 19, need I say more...

Yes, but whatever you do don't forget to stop wasting food!!!!
Never mind about the total disregard for careful spending of public funds.
We do not know how to govern our public utilities correctly. Every single one of them is wasting bundles of cash every day.

When I was admitted to Orpington Hospital in 2002, I found it to be ill staffed, filthy and an unpleasant place to be.
By 2006 It had improved so much that I wrote to the Secretary Of State, including the following paragraph
"A unit which, four years ago was;
A)NOT FIT FOR PURPOSE
b)A prime example of cross contamination gone mad.
C)Epitomised all that could be hygienically bad about a hospital.
But which, subsequently, had been turned round into a clinical centre for excellence, must not be considered for closure".
To have spent in excess £8 million of public money makes the decision even more laughable, and indicative of the wonton waste perpetrated by the regime.

I read, with disbelief, that Bromley NHS Trust has now decided - against public opinion - to close the state of the art operating facilities at Orpington Hospital. I had a hip replacement at Orpington 6 weeks ago and I have nothing but praise for the staff and facilities. I've been told that my other will need replacing as well but I WILL NOT put myself at risk by being admitted to Princess Royal ...... I have no wish to contract MRSA or C-Diff !!!! Orpington Hospital is free of these nasty bugs ...... why close it !!! It will save the Trust a million pound a year ........ big deal !! How are they going to recoup the other millions they've squandered - what will they close next ??? Maybe the answer is to get rid of all the high flyers they employ - there are too many of them sitting on their backsides wasting our money !

I was horrified to hear that Orpington Hospital is closing as it will mean that waiting lists will be even longer. When I broke my wrist in April, I had to stay in Princess Royal to have an op – they had no bed for me so I stayed in the Recovery Overflow ward. (I nevertheless had excellent treatment.) This Friday 11 July my sister was admitted to Orpington Hospital for an operation. When I went to visit on Saturday, there were just two patients in the ward. She was very impressed by the treatment she received. I think the current management ought to be sacked and someone with a bit of commonsense appointed who would make full use of the two hospitals.
