TODAY was the day in 1982 when the first successful implant of an artificial heart into a human took place.
The patient was Barney Clark, a 61-year-old dentist from Seattle in America who was suffering from congestive heart failure and deemed too sick to be eligible for a heart transplant.
Clark lived on for 112 days after the pioneering operation.
To mark the occasion we present this infographic from www.mercola.com showing 11 fascinating facts about the human heart and also some tips on keeping your heart healthy.
