Young people secure jobs at Olympics venue
MORE than 60 young people from Bexley and Greenwich have secured jobs during the Olympics, thanks to a Bexley-based youth organisation.
A team of eight youths from Active Horizons arranged for 63 jobs with caterers Arena at the Greenwich Olympic Park, where they will be paid at least £8.30 an hour, more than the National Minimum wage which ranges from £3.68 for 16 to 17-year-olds and £6.08 for over 21s.
For some, it was their first ever job interview. Tawanda Chamunorwa, 16, of Picardy Street in Belvedere said: “I am very glad to have the opportunity to be earning what most 16 year olds only dream of, especially in a time with such high unemployment. I really don't know how to express my feelings, as this gives me the necessary experience that I need to get on the job ladder as well as being right in the heart of the Olympics.”
Active Horizons now plans to try to secure paid internships and jobs with local firms. If you are interested in joining the team e-mail Cynthia@activehorizons.org.uk or go to activehorizons.org.uk.
