A SERIES of festivals across Greenwich will cost the council £580,000 it has been revealed.

Cabinet member for culture and Olympics Councillor John Fahy has approved the grants for organisers of this year’s Greenwich Festivals.

Money will go to Greenwich Theatre for a children’s event, the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival and part of the Peninsula Festival.

Elsewhere, cash is going to the Greenwich Dance Festival – a project involving English National Ballet, Scottish Ballet and National Dance Company Wales in their first joint project.

Other events being funded include a community film competition during the Sundance event, along with Parksfest 2012.

The eye-watering amount of money invested will come from the Olympic Legacy fund and aims to boost the borough’s tourism.

But some arts organisations and events such as the Plumstead Make Merry will look on enviously, having had their own council funding wiped out in the past year.
