POLICE in Greenwich have thanked News Shopper readers for their help in identifying people allegedly involved in last month's riots and looting in the borough.

Officers from the Met's Operation Withern have been reviewing hundreds of hours of CCTV footage, while a screen placed in Powis Street, Woolwich, beamed out pictures of those wanted in connection with the disorder.

Borough Commander Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Wood said:” Police officers have received several intelligence leads thanks to the readers of the News Shopper. I would like to thank to all the people that have come forward and assisted us with our enquiries.

"I have a dedicated team of officers working to ensure that all information passed to us is thoroughly investigated. Please continue to call us with information. We are here to investigate and follow every lead.”

Charges so far have included:

- A 16-year-old charged with arson with intent to endanger life, burglary and violent disorder. The teenager, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has been remanded in custody and will appear at London Inner Crown Court on September 29 for a plea.

- Mark Field, aged 51, of Pattison Walk, Woolwich, has been charged with burglary. He pleaded guilty at Camberwell Green Court and was committed for sentencing on October 6.

- Wayne James, aged 41, of Sandback Place, Woolwich, was charged with receiving stolen goods after he handed himself in at a police station. He pleaded guilty when he appeared in court and was sentenced to four months in prison and 60 hours unpaid work.

- A 15-year-old girl reported to police voluntarily after her picture appeared on the screen in Woolwich. She was arrested on August 24 and charged with burglary. She was sentenced at Camberwell Youth Court to a 10-month referral order.

- Wayne and Shane Chambers, both aged 33, from Nightingale Vale, Woolwich, have been charged with burglary. They are both in custody and are due to appear at Inner London Crown Court on September 27.

- Kerry Rimmer, aged 27, from Southwark, was charged with handling stolen goods. She pleaded guilty on August 29 and has been committed for sentencing to the Inner London Crown Court on a date to be set.

- Kevin Lane, aged 49, from Wellington Street, Woolwich, was charged for burglary. He pleaded guilty and is due to appear at Inner London Crown Court at a date to be set.

- A 16-year-old was charged with violent disorder and burglary after a member of the public recognised him on YouTube. He pleaded guilty at Camberwell Youth Court and will be sentenced on October 7.

- Michael Bellio, 24, from Sidcup High Street, charged with theft. He will appear at Camberwell Magistrates' Court on October 18.
