FOUR Russian students who celebrated raping an 18-year-old woman "like professional footballers celebrating a goal" have been jailed for a total of 35 years.

Norayr Davtyan, aged 22, was found guilty of two counts of rape and 23-year-old Gregory Melnikov was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of attempted rape at Woolwich Crown Court yesterday.

Oleg Ivanov, aged 23, and 19-year-old and Armen Simonyan were both found guilty of one count of rape each at the same court.

The court heard that the attack took place on January 23 in the dormitories of Bellerbys College, in Bounty House, Greenwich, where the defendants were living at the time.

The defendants, who had only been in the UK for two weeks, took it in turns to rape the victim in Davtyan's room, while filming the attack on an iPhone.

Woolwich Crown Court heard the defendants were drunk and that the victim also appeared to be severely intoxicated.

In delivering his sentence Judge Peter Murphy said: "The defendants took advantage of a young woman who was in no position to resist or to consent, or not to consent to what was going on."

Speaking about the iPhone footage Judge Murphy said: "It was described by more than one defence counsel as being pornographic. That is a description which is hard to disagree with.

"The iPhone footage shows what can only be described as a callous disregard for the victim. She is described as a f****** s*** and a machine for f******.

"She was regarded as an object for the defendant's sexual gratification."

Judge Murphy added: "Although there was no pre-existing plan, when the sequence of events started they were encouraging each other more and more.

"They are clearly seen on the iPhone celebrating their triumph almost like professional footballers celebrating a goal."

The judge described the incident as a sustained attack that lasted over a number of hours, punctuated only with breaks for smoking.

He said the filming of the incident was aimed at further degrading and humiliating the victim and could only have been intended to have one or both of two objectives - to humiliate the victim further, or to dissuade her from going to the police because she would be embarrassed by the video.

All four men appeared at Woolwich Crown Court today (August 23) to be sentenced.

Davtyan was sentenced to 10 years in prison for each count to run concurrently, while Melnikov was jailed for nine years for each count, also to run concurrently.

Ivanov, was jailed for eight years and Simonyan was sentenced to eight years in a young offenders institute.
