London Fire Brigade is telling people to be sensible and not swim in the Thames on the hottest day of the year.

Today (April 19) is the warmest April day in 70 years and because of that people are likely to be looking for ways to cool down.

The fire brigade tweeted: “Whilst it is the #WarmestDayOfTheYear please do not attempt to cool off in rivers or other open water in the city! #Heatwave #London #bewateraware #watersafety #ThursdayThoughts #Firefighters.”

Temperatures are meant to hit at least 28C today in central London, but escaping the heat isn’t worth the dirt and disease you would get from the Thames.

The Met Police’s marine policing unit also tweeted: “As tempting as it is to go for a swim in this weather, (even for our dogs), remember the water is still very cold and dangerous. #coldwatershock.”

If you are out in the sun today stay hydrated and cover yourself in sun cream, we haven’t had much sun recently so don’t get overwhelmed.
