Santa is not the only person who has to work over Christmas. Sickness and broken bones are not known for paying attention to holidays.

With that in mind, spare a thought for the Greenwich GP Dr Eugenia Lee who is working on Christmas day.

Eugenia is expecting a quiet day at the Thamesmead Health Centre, with her husband Martin also working as a hospital consultant.

Eugenia, who is usually based at the Gallions Reach Health Centre, said: “I’ve worked Xmas Day several times and usually see around 15-20 patients.

“No-one wants to be sick on Christmas Day but it happens and I’ve had everything from tonsillitis and ear infections to people with breathing problems. If a child is unwell it’s always worth erring on the side of caution.”

“You have to have a pre-booked appointment to be seen so it’s no good just turning up on the day. Ring NHS 111 first and they will assess whether or not you need an appointment.”

GP cover will also be available on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day between 8am-8pm.
