If you're planning to travel in and around London over Christmas, it's best to check timetables before you leave as there'll be considerable reduction to services.

Between December 23 and January 1, Transport for London (TfL) engineers will be undertaking essential improvement works on tracks, roads and signalling. Network Rail will also be carrying out engineering work that will affect some TfL services.

Here's a run-down of some of the changes:

Christmas Eve

After 8pm there'll be a reduced service on London Underground, which will finish for Christmas at 9.30pm. Buses will stop running at midnight and all other services, including overground trams, trains and DLR, will stop running around 10pm.

Christmas Day

There will be no services on public transport on Christmas Day, but the good news is you can use the Santander bikes 365 days a year!

Boxing Day

On Boxing Day there will be no London Overground, but the DLR will be running every five to ten minutes and the tube and buses will be running a Sunday service.

New Year's Eve

There's good news for those planning to party all evening on December 31 - because TfL will be providing free travel on London buses, tubes, trams, DLR and London Overground (between 11.45pm and 4.30am) so that you can get home safely.

New Year's Day

There'll be a reduced Sunday service on the tubes, while on the buses there'll be a usual Sunday service, albeit with some diversions in central London due to fireworks and New Year's Day parade. A Sunday timetable will also run on the London Overground and DLR

Key closures during the period include:

No service on the Circle line between Aldgate and Edgware Road via Victoria or on the District line between South Kensington and Edgware Road/Ealing Broadway/Richmond/Wimbledon/Kensington (Olympia) from Sunday 24 to Saturday 30 December 2017.
